Way to Your Heart Blog-hop - Part 1

First off, happy birthday to Less Than Three Press! They put in so much love, effort and time, and there is so much love for these ladies and the work that they do! There is a bloghop to celebrate this fabulous publisher's fourth birthday, with many authors participating. Many are also doing giveaways, so check out the main post!

I had to think about what I love for this post, and it's come down to two major contenders. There are, of course, the usual (reading, writing... tumblr >.>) but for these posts I'm going to focus on non-writing related loves: video games, and horseback riding. Next week's post is about videogames.

Today's post is going to be about horse riding.

~*~

I can't remember a time when I haven't loved horses. I was seven when a friend of mine got a horse, which was the instigator for my lessons as there was no way my parents were going to let me ride her brat of a pony without knowing how to ride at all. My brother and mother joined me for the first few years of lessons, and then we moved, and the lessons stopped.

Recently, I've been able to take up horseriding again. I've been doing it in Canada for almost two years now, and it was, quite frankly, astonishing to find out how my general mood improved with just a weekly lesson, which is usually about 2 hours of 'horse time'. There are the occasional days when I stay longer, and I come home in a state of absolute horse bliss, even if the past five hours have been spent primarily mucking stalls.

There is something about horses that just calms me, and warms me up inside, that makes it worth getting up at 6:45 AM on a Saturday to make it to the barn in time. I never understood how sport enthusiasts could get up early (in the freezing cold, more often than not in Canada) and drive the distances needed to get to their location--at least, I never understood it until recently. As a child, you tend not to care too much about waking up early and the effort of getting ready in time, but as an adult, especially when you work 35+ hours a week, weekends are more important for sleeping in than ever. And yet, I'm perfectly happy to leave however early I need to.

There are many different aspects to horse riding, and general horsemanship that make the time spent more than worthwhile. I think the bond you make with the horse is one of the best rewards that you will ever come across. I adore my cat (really, he deserves a post of his own) but there's just something more that the horse I ride can give me that's on a whole different level than what my cat can provide.

They are beautiful, powerful animals; and when they learn to trust you, to obey you, it makes you powerful. Maybe that's when you discover a little more about the person you are--when you have that power, you can choose what to do with it.

Maybe it's because they are also so silly sometimes, so quirky, so frightfully naughty; each horse I've ridden has had it's own problems, but once the bond is there, they've generally tried their best for me, and it makes me want to do my best for them in return.

It's the most powerful partnership I can think of, and my life would be (was, for quite a few years) stagnant without it. Now that I've got the opportunity to ride again, however, even with the day to day uncertainties that plague everyone--I, at least, can forget them for at least two amazing hours each week.

  1. I've always loved horses as well, but I've sadly never really had an opportunity to follow through on it. I rode a few times when I was younger, but in recent years I haven't even been near a horse.

    As for my favourite outdoor activity. That must be hiking, though that is also something I do far too little off. ^^;;

  2. Horseback riding sounds like fun but I think it's a bit too scary for me. I'm the type of person who has to have their feet on the ground all the time.

I like to have a brisk walk or light jog around and see the scenery. I especially love it in the spring time since everything is just starting to come back to life. The air is fresh and the trees and plants a vibrant color.

  3. I also love(d) horses as a child, I would still love to take up riding again, but I don't think thats going to happen any time soon. My favorite outdoor activity is sailing. I was on boats since before I could walk and sailing is just relaxing as compared to speedboating. I was raised sailing on Lake Superior, so I guess I'm spoiled for gorgeous scenery. I'm going to miss it when I move away for grad school.

  4. Horses are such beautiful and gentle animals. I wish I could have learned how to ride.
I'm not a big fan of outdoor activities *hangs head in shame*. I like to walk and do stuff in my garden, but usually I don't do any of these without a purpose. I rarely just walk for the sake of walking and if I go out it my garden I either do it to take photos of plants and bugs or plant/trim flowers and bushes, sweep the dust off the alley, clean dry leaves and stuff like that.
I guess I should stop and enjoy the fresh air form time to time.

  6. I worked security at a horse track this past summer. The only good thing about that job was the horses. They really are such beautiful animals. I can totally understand why you like them.

My favorite outdoor activity is picking the vegetables from my dad's garden. There's always beans and strawberries growing, so every day I go out to harvest. It really is a ton of fun!

  7. I am not as experienced as you obviously are, but I do love riding around my grandad's property on his horses.

My favorite activity? Hiking. I love hiking. I got into it when I lived in Utah...there's nothing like hiking those mountains and canyons. In Arkansas the mountains are different, but no less fun.

  8. If I find the time I love swimming. I never learned riding but a friend of mine has her own horse – beautiful animals!

  9. Surprisingly enough, I used to show as well (English) but it's been forever since I've been on a horse. I miss it. They're beautiful animals.

Outdoor activities are at a minimal for me because I'm -- what my partner most lovingly refers to as -- a basement troll. (Sun? What is this sun you speak of?) But if I had to actually choose *something* it would be sitting on my back deck sharing a drink with friends. That counts, right?

  10. This is pretty generic, but I love going for walks in the outdoors. There's this place in Door County Wisconsin called White Fish Dunes, and it has the most beautiful water beaten caverns right on Lake Michigan. I love hiking there; it's so beautiful!

  11. My favourite outdoor activity would have to be basking in the sun? Although, I'm not really sure if that counts. However laying in a hammock in the sun swinging back and forth has to be awesome no matter who you are, I'd think. I'm also a fan of laying about on the beach. I was a mermaid in another life probably. Anyway, contact is efoster919(at)yahoo

  12. Hmmm. My favourite outdoor activity will be walking down the beach. Standing in front of the ocean with all its power has a way of putting everything into perspective for me.

  13. I was born in the city and live in the city, so I'm not really into outdoor activities. But I discovered ziplines 2 summers ago. The zipline I rode is in South Cotabato here in the Philippines, apparently the highest zipline in our country. It's placed above 5 waterfalls, and what an amazing experience it was both times I did it. Given a chance I would do it again and again. :)
